Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
This abhorrent movie features a romantic worldview with strong
pagan elements and anticapitalist motifs, depicting confectionery entrepreneurs
as demonic tempters who lure children with addictive substances and call upon
dancing imps to mete out ironic punishments à la Dante's Inferno.
Explicit mentions of hell and the Grim Reaper imply a satanic pact, and
although honesty is rewarded, redemption is attained only by being less bad
than one's peers, with no mention of the true salvation of God and Jesus
Christ... That, at least, is how the conservative Christian Web site Movieguide
might review Willy Wonka. The rest of you should already know that, like
The Wizard of Oz, this children's book adaptation has taken on a life of
its own quite apart from the source material (besides, a faithful adaptation
couldn't be done with 1971 technology). Though it takes too long (almost 45
minutes!) for the title character to appear, it's all head-trip from there. And
anyone who doesn't like the Oompa-Loompa song simply isn't human.
