i just have to say too... i love reading this post aloud, with dom deluise's name exclamated and then me kinda listed as also-ran... my single hope is that at some point deep in the future dom deluise will be listed as also-ran to me in the big birthday booklet. but i have a lot to eat between then and now, many wise-cracks to utter, several guest-appearances in burt reynolds vehicles, much mugging to do on the tonight show with some kind of spilled fluid in my lap. what this does for me though is offer up a some kind of goal post, or a high-water mark. a reason to get out of bed tomorrow. today i almost didn't make it. tomorrow will be something else entirely.

thank you, luke!

(and happiest of birthdays to jerry garcia.)

i knew it was dom deluise's birthday, but i'd forgotten it was mine too. thanks, luke. i called my mom to ask her how old i was. turns out she'd forgotten my birthday too, which is cool. curiosity piqued, she called the family doctor & former mayor/sheriff of tuscumbia, missouri, now retired & making dream-catchers which he claims to be vintage osage indian artifacts and which he sells on the internet, and he said he thought i was 34, but can't be sure because he was drinking a lot during those decades. then my grandmother found a journal entry, dusted off the abbacus and started crunching wooden balls, and lo it turns out i'm the dirty thirty. they didn't keep formal records back then, but i trust my grandmother's journal if i trust anything in this world.

dirty thirty. it's about time i did something.
