Unpleasant trend

Why is it that for two straight years now, the one time I get a cold that knocks me down a little just happens to coincide with having to go see an alleged “comedy” featuring a black comedian unfunnily dressed up as an old woman?

People complain about bad movies, then they make this kind of stuff number one at the box office. I don’t get it. Has there EVER been a good movie that centered on a male comic dressing up as an old lady?

Don’t say Mrs. Doubtfire, unless you want me to label you as Mr./Ms. Doubtsanity.

this from the man who wants a 1:1 scale bust of venom. just kidding.

i liked doubtfire, but i was 12, so i’m not apologizing for it. i haven’t seen it since.

i do still like hook, which many would say is just as bad. never saw patch adams, worked with a guy who thought it was the best movie ever made.

i suppose this is a bad time to point this out…

  • Well, a lot of health is psychological… I’d say you’re literally worrying yourself sick about having to watch crappy movies that weekend.

sean…you haven’t seen your share of anonymous comments here?

I don’t reject them, because I remember high school, when the school paper rejected anonymous letters critical of the administration.

Can’t say I’ve liked any of them on this site so far, but that isn’t the point.

La cage aux folles – the original French farce – not the Robin Williams farcical remake – but it didn’t really centre on a man in a dress I guess.

but the modern genre pastiche is always so badly scripted as to be intolerable – burn all the prints!

and what does Venom have to do with a guy in a dress?

OK, not necessarily ‘great cinema’, but Tootsie was cute. What about Some Like it Hot? I don’t think anyone expects movies like this to be much more than fluff entertainment.

How about “Throw Momma Off The Train?” Whoever he is, he made me believe to throw her off the train…

    Joke only.

ED – Anne Ramsey was actually a woman.

Peggy – I said “old lady.” Those two movies don’t feature old ladies last I remember.

i realized after the 2nd post that i’ve seen plenty of anonymity. on my brothers page it automatically makes anon. posters ’some nameless jerk’.

as for venom, i just mean that the man who wants to display that in his home should probably accuse other people of having poor taste. let he who is without sin, and etc.

that’s just because i’ve never been a big fan of venom as he’s generally depicted. at least that bust doesn’t have the green drool.

A bust and a movie aren’t exactly analogous, though.

I’d never cut it as an art critic, because I’d much rather have a Todd McFarlane drawing on my wall than a Picasso painting.

If I had the Picasso painting, I’d sell it to buy more of the stuff I like.

Having said that: If you were to offer that a bust of Martin Lawrence as Big Momma were preferable to that Venom bust, I would doubt your sanity.

Similarly, when Venom eventually appears in a movie, I’ll place money on you liking it more than Doubtfire.

  • Eh, dudes in drag, busts. Connection makes sense to me.

  • Does cross dressing count (Divine, Crying Game) or does the actor have to be a recognizably straight actor? You asked awhile back if there was some tradition of drag in black comedy, and not just drag, but drag in the form of the big fat Mama. I thought about the Eddie Murphy movie where he took on all those roles, including a big Mama. I remember finding it funny. Could that be Martin Lawrence’s inspiration, or is it from some older tradition? Don’t know.

Could be some older “tradition,” I think. The Hollywood studios continue to recycle the same old stuff every 20 years to a new generation. And, of course, each generation eats it up. The weekend US box-office shows that the Martin Lawrence “Momma” sequel was the #1 film. But, then, again, it’s all strategy. “Momma 2″ is the first real comedy to hit this year amongst the Oscar and horror films out there now. As well as “Momma 2″ has already a built-in audience from the first one.
