-I replaced a lightbulb
-I cleaned my kitchen floor
-I did ALL my laundry at once
Shredded a bunch of documents too, but I do that a lot. I might vacuum for the first time soon.
I guess I may have to pay my own way to the Press Club awards, where two of my OC Weekly stories are finalists, but one way or another, I’ll be there.
People ask me what next. It is almost inevitable I’ll move back to L.A. county, but I have to be able to afford it first, and I can’t just yet – unless you know of a one-bedroom apartment in L.A. with A/C, a dishwasher, and less than $1000/mo rent.
I will be doing some odds and ends for the LA Weekly and others. I am also happy to say I will be covering the LA Film Festival (don’t yet know for whom, but I will), which is one perk of the whole situation — were I still on staff here, I would most likely have had to miss it. And it is one of my three favorite things to attend all year.
One more speaking part in a union film and I can be SAG. I think.
Meanwhile, I still live right across the street from my old office.
Oh, and I also have info on WICKED LAKE showings in San Fran, NYC, and Pittsburgh…

More interesting posts than this one will come soon enough, promise…

I think you’d need to look for a place with roommates for that kind of money, which is a pretty unappealing prospect.
From a million miles away…Unappealing….but maybe possible? (Same dilemma I’ve faced…tho in UK…over the last 6 years.
& Sorry to be predictable…a dishwasher???????
Love Unc T
How is that predictable, Tony?
My point is I have a dishwasher and A/C now, and rent under $1000.
For me to move to a place that’s, say, $1100, and has no A/C or dishwasher, just to be 30 miles different, makes no sense.
The lack of A/C in Hollywood really drove me out of my mind two summers ago. Over 100 degrees in my place every damn day of summer, it seemed.
Ah, the early days of unemployment. ‘Wow, this is great! Look at all the stuff I have time for! Awesome!’
Take 2 : Pleased it wasn’t predictable with yourself, Luke.
I don’t happen to have many of the material things my peer-group/work-mates have – eg a car or a telly….so..(element of sour grapes, of course!) I tend to be critical/”puritan” when people complain about lack of money…when they’ve just bought some or other “luxury” item.
Anyway…I take the point that you’re making a comparative judgement. I was commenting – don’t hold back for lack of a dishwasher deal.
Bon Courage, Tony
Start with Craigslist to get an idea of pricing and locations… Continue with Rental websites and tons of driving and looking…
My place in WEST LA, did not have a dishwasher so I bought one. A full size portable one that hooks to my sink. It has changed my life, but sucks that I have to “wheel” it around to hook it up, plus it was $500.
My place also does not have AC, not even a “box of cool” on the wall. I bought three fans. It helps, but still can get very hot. Ideally a place that has “cross” cooling, I.E. and window/door that can be opened at the front of the apartment and a window at the back, then mucho fans…
You will not be able to find a place with central air for under $1300, not a chance. But you should be able to find a place with a box of cool and a dishwasher for $1000 and under. My place in west la is $1200 and it doesn’t have any of that… but I live a couple miles from the beach so they jack up the rent because of the location.
i have always and will always do my own dishes. i find it a reflective time. i send others away from the task if they try. i want it. completes the meal period.
ps — luke, i know what you meant and know your post has nothing to do with dishwashers specifically so don’t say point that out.
you folks obliquely touched on a thing i’ve been thinking about much lately — a kind of of personal accounting, cleaning.
My last place had no dishwasher, and for the time we lived there, about 80% of the fights jesse and I had were over whose turn it was to do the dishes. It is not for everybody.
“…I might vacuum for the first time ”
if you have time – you don’t need a dishwasher if you have only just realised that dirt doesn’t work – welcome to the post teen world…
and if this blog says I have “posted too frequently”, as in, once in the odd month – I’ll be off – to vacuum my living room, polish the conservatory floor and clean out the shower.
Also you don’t need a laundry machine, Pat — what’s wrong with beating your clothes against an old fashioned washboard?
[at my last place, I occasionally did hand-wash when I was out of quarters - civilized machines here take cash cards]
And who needs ovens if you have a backyard — build a damn fire yourself! Also, chop down the trees with your own ax to obtain the firewood. You have the time, right? Want to save electricity, don’t you?
