LA Film Critics Association announces awards

Yes, I’m a voter for these. Tried to get Dark Knight on top, and came close…I’m particularly glad we found ways to honor WALTZ WITH BASHIR and HUNGER, two movies that deserve a wider audience. I don’t agree with giving Mike Leigh Best Screenplay, considering the degree to which his movies are improvised, but c’est la vie.

Read the list of winners HERE.

And, if anyone is interested in being my guest to the awards gala, the spot is currently open. It isn’t free — cost is $50 — but last year’s gift bag featured a collection of DVDs and soundtracks worth more than the price of admission. Most of the winners will be in attendance, but this is NOT a “networking” event, so no gold-diggers please.

Drop me a line if you’re interested. Serious inquiries only. Monday, Jan. 12.

UPDATE: Just finished watching HAPPY-GO-LUCKY in its entirety. Sweet Jesus, it’s embarrassing we honored this with anything. The structure may not be Hollywood cliche, but at this stage it’s certainly Mike Leigh cliche, and the contrivances are thick…never underestimate the ability of accents to distract people from the fact that they’re watching crap, I guess.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is more worthy than this, and it wasn’t all that.
