Today’s E! review

Let us test offpat’s newfound ability to avoid redirects…

I probably could be writing about just about any movie when I say “…save for a handful of S-words, there’s nothing here you couldn’t see on TV, and thus it wouldn’t hurt to wait for that format if you have even the slightest bit of interest.”

but I was in fact talking about THIS

unblock is needed, but works – but I won’t be going to see a cheerleader movie any time in the next 40 years….and I doubt I will even catch this on TV when it winds up on a remote cable channel in about four years time…

Damn! I’m stuck taking my little sister to this on Monday. I already wasn’t looking forward to it, and now I’m wondering if I can discretely sneak a nap in during the show.

  • Hm. Seems like an odd choice to have PG in the rating.

  • do tits mean PG in the states?

we have them/nudity on mainstream TV (not late late, and not cable) a lot here so it always surprises me what The USA chooses to censor…

offpat – no. Tits nearly always garner an automatic “R” rating (no-one under 17 admitted without parent — unlike in the UK, kids here can see practically anything provided a parent is with them. Only NC-17 bars kids completely, and it’s thought to be such box-office poison that studios will do anything to avoid it).

The only time a tit shot can get by with a PG-13 is if the nudity is deemed to be naturalistic and non-sexual, i.e. a Kalahari bushwoman. But it’s also well-known that big studios get an easier shake of it — Kate Winslet posing nude for a drawing in Titanic got a pass, even though it was arguably an erotic scene.

  • famously the Swedes and Norwegians allow much more sexual content in both mainstream cinema and TV, but much less violence – particularly if the violence is associated in any way with sexual or sadistic pleasure.

I don’t think its unfair to say that whether this reflects the culture or helps shape the culture, or both, the place I prefer to see censorship imitate is Scandinavia.
