I do find Wiseau funny - for a brief while. He has that takes-himself-so-seriously bollocks that I suppose counts as unintentionally funny - but it doesn't last - the annoyance factor kicks in a lot quicker than with Ed Wood - and I couldn't watch his movies again now - the innocence of that time is not recapturable.
the joke just gets tired very quickly.

That is a fantastic link, Justin -- and the viewer's guide quite helpful; it seems there've been new chants added since last I was there.

"but that none of the modern equivalents have the right mix of unintentional hilarity plus genuinely awful special effects"

Did you not see the greenscreening in that montage? Where, rather than finding an actual San Francisco rooftop, they built a fake rooftop in an LA parking lot, and surrounded it in greenscreen to add in the SF skyline?

And if you don't find Wiseau hilarious, I don't know what to say. Still, you haven't actually seen the whole movie.

The best -- and only great dogme movie -- is Festen/The Celebration. Von Trier is nowhere close to "so bad it's good"; he has talent, and is often determined to make people hate him. "So good it's bad" would be more apt for him.

except the Rocky Horror picture show has real actors, real camp, a reasonable script, (up to a point where I turn off) and some jokes...

I can't help but say that the slightly nerdy idea of being in a cult of people who love bad movies made by bad actors/directors was started long ago with Ed Wood - but that none of the modern equivalents have the right mix of unintentional hilarity plus genuinely awful special effects - and without something like that they all pale. There might be one or two that get better with age, like "Glen Or Glenda" has, but I doubt it...

Lars von Trier's dogme stuff is in some ways "better" but I often think he was really after an excuse for not getting a real budget and claiming art status the way some abstract painters at my college used to - really naff IMO ...and I don't want to watch the dogme films either.

"it came over as cosmetic, cliched and unconvincing."

Missing the point, I think...

That's like saying "The Rocky Horror Picture Show looks campy, over-the-top, and unrealistic."

Well - spice of life, then!
On the basis of this reel, I wouldn't watch it if it was showing 2 minutes away & you gave me the ticket. I've only watched the highlight reel once...but it came over as cosmetic, cliched and unconvincing.

Good wishes
