Going “off the grid”

I am about to disconnect from the Internet for a few days, and from cable TV for the foreseeable future. Hope to be back on late Thursday.

I will be reachable by cell phone only. And would certainly like to socialize, as there’ll be little fun to be had staying home in an empty apartment full of boxes.

Saturday I’m planning one last trip to the Olde Ship in Santa Ana, after which I’ll sleep off the booze for a bit, then turn in my keys. Feel free to join me.

Luke, it’s been too long… how about turning Saturday into a mini-meetup? I’ll give Bradley a shout if that’s cool with you.

Also, don’t quote me, but maybe maybe maybe I can have you both over to my place for a DVD movie and some Long Island Iced Tea,fresh from the TGI Fridays bottle. As the job’s been going okay, I’ve been expanding my DVD collection lately and would love the opportunity to show it off, at least. :-)

Anyway, let me know if this is do-able on your end.

Also before you (as a former employer of mine, Verizon, calls going off the system) ‘disco’, just would love to know if you should have any thoughts on the great Patterico vs. Protein Wisdom rift that’s been going on for the past couple days. If not, that’s OK too.

Steve, I haven’t been following the debate, but I took a look at the linked Patterico post, and tried to follow his links to Goldstein, but they seemed to have changed or been deleted.

I’d love to weigh in for you, but as a responsible left-leaning blogger, I think it’s probably better I don’t. I understand the issue in theory, knowing how the left was after the re-election of Bush.

But my instant temptation is to post based on pre-existing biases. I’ve met Patterico, I like him, and while I think he often parses left-leaning stuff to death by a thousand cuts, and believe his support of Palin was extraordinarily stupid, I do think he is trying to be fair, in general.

Goldstein, in the left-blogosphere, is much-maligned and known as an ego-googler. The fact that he seems to have deleted the comments linked by Patterico is not a positive. But who knows, maybe if I met him, I’d like him too.

Point is, I don’t know enough to transcend what would be my natural biases going in. That may be the right call, but I wouldn’t stake my reputation, such as it is, on that.

  • Luke, Steve, looking forward to seeing you both tomorrow!

I was part of the Patterico/PW exchange. I came away thinking Patterico was wrong about Limbaugh, but that the other guy Who Is Not To Be Named is an egotistical, paranoid, vindictive and dishonest person who projects his own qualities on others. So are many of his commenters. (There are some decent folks there. They will probably be eventually denounced for not being sufficiently zealous in the blog’s Stalinesque conformity).

I made up my mind about Limbaugh based on Limbaugh himself said. Patterico didn’t convince me, and the paranoid dude’s arguments are half pretentious linguistic gibberish and half foul language and sneers. Limbaugh is very eloquent and needs no translation. And Limbaugh has a sense of humor and can poke fun at himself, unlike the paranoid drama queen.
