A Memorial Day post better than I could write

Cinerati’s Christian Lindke left the following comment on my Facebook page, in reference to a Daily Kos post about Native American dead. I thought it worth sharing.

I think that honoring the Native Americans who fought for their freedom against the US Cavalry is a very good idea. When one looks at the history of Arlington Memorial Cemetery, it makes even more sense. General Robert E. Lee donated the land that is now Arlington as a place for all American soldiers to be buried. Memorial bridge is meant to symbolize the reconnecting of our nation and the sacrifice of the Americans who died in the Civil War.

It should also be noted that while slavery was the issue that led to the civil war, and was why many of the elites voted for secession, it would be an error to think that every Johnny Reb fought to keep slavery legal.

Obama did right by honoring both the Confederates and the African-American soldiers who fought against the Confederacy. What conversations like this bring to the front is how far we still have to go to heal the wounds caused by slavery and other grievous actions America has participated in historically.
