Music, to my ears

It’s funny that I haven’t really done some long-ass review of WATCHMEN, just smaller blog posts on different issues it brings up. But I really feel it needs time to be considered. The nature of the critical game is to process these things as quickly as we can, although I think most of my very [...]

Proof that ’80s videos were just better

I used to ask for my hair to be cut like Nik Kershaw’s…

My Grandfather’s Column

Why believe in God?

I am happy to go along with the idea that the natural sciences are entitled to disown the existence of God provided they are equally happy to agree that they cannot prove his non-existence either. Most religious people would say that God is the first cause of all that is. [...]

Times, they are a ‘changin’

While we’ve been debating the merits of ANIMAL HOUSE on the post below, especially as regards whether a movie should strive for timely or timeless appeal, WATCHMEN has also come to mind.

Specifically, many reviewers have suggested that keeping it set in 1985, under the Cold War, might have been a bad idea, because today’s viewers [...]

Watch LOST IN THE BUSH – right here and now!

Writer-director Kevin Ford has made the whole thing available for free on Youtube — with a DVD-quality version available at mo-freek.com for ten bucks.

LOST IN THE BUSH stars Eddie Steeples (“Crab Man” on MY NAME IS EARL) as the last honest soldier in an incompetent homeland security squadron, somewhere in the near future
when the U.S. [...]

Hatin’ the ‘poon

I just watched National Lampoon’s ANIMAL HOUSE for the first time ever.

Oh man, was I disappointed. This is a comedy classic? It’s barely funny at all.

I realize there’s a ground-breaking factor here — mainstream college comedies prior weren’t so casual about sex, nudity, drinking, and drugs. The casual nudity is still impressive, and more than [...]

Un-Covered

As alt-weeklies continue to cut overhead by ditching features that readers actually like — comics, syndicated columns, and excessive movie reviews (i.e. more than 2 per week; oh, for the good old days of six reviews an issue) — I have a proposal that I think will save even more money, and probably not make [...]

WATCHMEN – reaction thread

If you saw it, tell me what you thought.

Things I’m sad to NOT see in the movie (MINOR spoilers):

-Karnak pretty much streamlined down to one big room and a corridor. No giant glass bubble that opens, no 2001-style dinner table scene.

-No origin given for Rorschach’s mask.

-Laurie’s last name is never said aloud, so I STILL [...]

My WATCHMEN review is posted

This is one where a little more time, a couple more viewings, and a lot more space would have been preferable…but we work with what we have. In all honesty, my reaction to the movie may or may not change by year’s end, though I look forward to the extended cuts.

Here you go…

I will add: [...]

Okay, so here’s what’s happening with me.

I have given my notice here in Santa Ana, and will be living somewhere else come April.

Where that will be, I don’t yet know. But I have determined that it will be in Los Angeles. I considered many other options, including Virginia, San Diego, or even re-upping here for six months. It then occurred to [...]
