As much as I dislike Ms. Rice...

...I have to say this week's Robbie Conal caricature in LA Weekly strikes me as tasteless and offensive. Think they'd dare caricature Maxine Waters the same way?

Discuss.

I'm surprised there hasn't been some controversy over that yet. It is pretty demeaning and stereotypical.

It's not clever, and has no comment, other than the artist's lack of imagination and mean-spiritedness. What's the point?

The only possible justification I can imagine anyone having is that the neocon philosophy is in some ways akin to that of gangsta rappers -- but even in rap circles, the whole gold tooth/big chains thing is a hoary, outdated stereotype.

When Conal drew Rice previously, sans gimmicks, and used the caption "Black Hawk Down," I wasn't bothered -- that was kinda clever. If Rice had recorded a really bad rap album as a teen, maybe this would work. But it's really tough to argue that this is mocking anything other than her skin color, which goes against all the Weekly's self-proclaimed principles.

I agree with Nancy. One could go on and on about what's bad about it, but what's the point? To me it's simply a failed effort by the cartoonist. It tells me more about the cartoonist than the subject of his pen. Bah!
