"WORST FILM OF THE YEAR"? You have such a grudge against little Battle in Heaven. I figured your initial reaction against it was a bit of a knee jerk against the NYC criticism of your criticism. I mean, it's certainly not the best movie I've seen, but to call it the WORST FILM OF THE YEAR? In a world of Santa Clauses and such? So much disdain!

Also, did you see there is a letter to the editor in the Weekly regarding your Eragon review?

I reviewed it before any of that stuff happened, and unlike some writers, I try very hard not to be just a knee-jerk contrarian. Battle in Heaven is aggressively, abrasively awful -- as opposed to a big studio misfire, it's clear that every choice in it is deliberate and intended -- and I know of at least two major LA film critics who join me in calling it the worst. Certainly, everyone I saw it with came out shaking their heads.
I'd rather watch Man of the Year and Santa Clause 3 on a double feature again than Battle in Heaven. I'd rather see Deck the Halls or Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj again than Battle in Heaven. It is truly one of the worst movies I've ever seen, and it's the director's second internationally distributed feature, so there's nothing "poor little" about him.

Fair enough. You hate it, I hear you.
Also, I didn't say "poor little".
